Meet Vee: A Story of Courage, Dreams, and New Beginnings
By Virginia Espinia-Laboy
Every child has a unique story. Some grow up in the same place they were born, while others begin an incredible journey that takes them across oceans, discovering new languages, and adapting to different cultures. This is the exciting story of Vee.
From Cuba to the United States: The Beginning of the Journey
Vee was born in Cuba, a beautiful tropical island full of music, traditions, and warm people. But she also grew up in a society with many limitations, where freedoms common elsewhere were lacking. Although she was young, her parents dreamed of giving her a future full of opportunities, where her talent and dedication would allow her to build her dreams.
Full of courage and hope, Vee and her parents made a big decision: they left their home behind to start a new adventure in the United States.
Like many immigrant families, they arrived with only the essentials in their suitcases, but with things of great value in their hearts: love, a willingness to work hard, curiosity to learn, and immense gratitude for this opportunity.
Growing up as an Afro-Cuban girl in the United States, Vee discovered that every day brought a new lesson. Many were cheerful and fun: learning to play the piano, making friends with people from all over, helping in her father's flower shop, or playing in the afternoon with her dog Murito. Other lessons came with challenges that taught her to be patient, brave, and kind.
Exploring her new environment, Vee noticed something surprising: the strength of this country came from the diversity of its people. She met friends with roots in Romania, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Italy, and beyond. Thus, she learned that even if we speak different languages or have different customs, we all share the same desires: to communicate, make friends, learn, and move forward.
And the most precious thing Vee discovered was that where we come from does not define who we are; what truly matters are the choices we make every day.
Choosing to tell the truth, putting in effort, being kind, forgiving, and being grateful shapes our character. Those small daily decisions form the foundation of a fantastic and meaningful life.
This book is inspired by the stories of countless immigrant families full of courage and hope. It also celebrates the opportunities that freedom gives us and invites us to use them in the best way possible.
It doesn't matter if your family has been here for many years or if you recently arrived: Vee's story shows that kindness and gratitude have no borders, and that dreams are for anyone brave enough to pursue them.
Welcome to Vee's journey!
We hope her story inspires you to make good decisions, enjoy learning, appreciate all the good things around you, and remember that every sunrise is a new opportunity to be the best version of yourself.
